Ayr Seaforth Athletics Sponsorship

Well after months of hard work by one local videographer, I am pleased to announce the launch of the promotional videos of my local athletics club, Ayr Seaforth. I am extremely happy to have been allowed to sponsor this video, as I am a firm believer of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle, and this club has a very good reputation locally for bringing on young athletes and promoting a sense of belonging between the members.

So what are the Health Benefits of Physical Exercise?

  1. Running Makes You Happier: Exercise releases the bodies own “happy” chemicals, endorphins, even after a reasonably short burst of activity. A study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise in 2006, showed that even 30 minutes on a treadmill was enough to lift the mood of someone suffering from a major depressive disorder. Physical activity is an alternative to anti-depressants for treating depression, according to a study in May 2013, in the same journal.
  2. Running Gives You Better Body Shape: Running will give you a more defined body, as any excess body fat is developed into muscle. When you exercise, you will burn more calories than when you are sedentary, and this continues for quite a while after you stop, the length of time dependant on activity. Prof Greg Whyte OBE recommends short sharp bursts of activity throughout the day, rather than 1 long session, such as an hour at the gym. Activity above exercise. Doing a 1 hour workout and then sitting down for the other 23 hours is not the way to do it, so incorporate star jumps or skipping into your day. get up from your seat every 20-30 minutes and do some on the spot jogging. Stop right NOW and JUST DO IT! Post in the comments below what you did and how it made you feel please.
  3. Running Will Keep You More Mentally Alert: Regular exercise helps defeat mental decline associated with age. A study in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review published in Dec 2012 came to the conclusion that regular exercise helps with particular functions such as task switching, selective attention and working memory. Fitter elderly people scored better that their unfit peers. 1 amazing benefit noted in stroke victims was an increase by 50% in memory, language, thinking and judgement
  4. Running Reduces Your Risk of Developing Certain Cancers: Epidemiological studies in the Journal of Nutrition showed that regular exercise is associated with a lower risk of certain cancers, and can help people diagnosed with cancer to cope with treatment, when they feel able.
  5. Physical Activity Prolongs Your Life. Just 30 minutes, 5 times a week increase your life span, but if you read point 2 you will know that short sharp bursts are better than longer periods. Even smokers can add years to their lives by doing some form of regular exercise. Cancer survivors increased their life expectancy by 5.3 years. Now isn’t that worth knowing?
  6. Running Strengthens Your Bones: Any weight-bearing activity strengthens your bones, and is better for you in preventing osteoporosis that drinking a pint of milk a day. Weight-bearing exercise increases bone mass and has the added bonus of stemming the age-related bone loss. Science has proven that the old adage “running is bad for your knees” is just not true. According to Boston University, the opposite is true and it improves knee health, probably due to the increase in muscle strength to the muscles that are attached by tendons, around the knee-joint. What they may experience more, is damage to the soft tissue, in the tendons or the ligaments, which is why I recommend a collagen supplement for those people who come to me for treatment, who are keen runners.

So now that the Spring weather is here, with the clocks Springing forward this weekend, can I encourage you to increase your physical activity. I would love to know how you are getting on, and how you are feeling.

Blessings Have a Lovely Easter

Collagen, What is it? Which Type do you Need?

Have you thought about taking Collagen and if so, why?

It can be confusing trying to find the Collagen Capsules which will best suit your needs.  Some people may not even realise there are different types of collagen!  The question you should be asking yourself is “Why am I taking Collagen in the first place?

Collagen the facts?

Collagen is the primary structural protein found in the body, making up over 25% to 35% of the whole-body protein content.  It is abundant throughout the body and is found in connective tissue, bone, all organs and especially skin where it makes up to 90% of the structural protein.

Collagen is the main component of connective tissue.  Collagen, in the form of elongated fibrils, is mostly found in fibrous tissues such as tendon, ligament and skin, and is also abundant in cornea, cartilage, bone, blood vessels, the gut, and intervertebral disc. It is like a superglue, holding us all together. Unfortunately we start to lose it from the age of about 25, and the results of collagen loss start visually, the changing shape of your face, loss of skin elasticity, formation of line and wrinkles, but it’s the internal issues that we really have to worry about.  The loss of strength in ligaments, tendons, cartilage and of course bone, which long term could contribute to Osteoarthritis.

Let’s take a closer look at the three main types of collagen found in the human body.

Type I Collagen

Type I Collagen is the most common type of collagen found in the body.  It’s found in tendons, skin, artery walls, cornea, and the organic part of bones and teeth.  Type I Collagen is good for improving your skin and hair as well as being an overall balanced collagen type.

Type II Collagen

Type II Collagen is found in Hyaline Cartilage and makes up 50% of all cartilage protein.  It’s also found in the Vitreous Humour of the eye.  This collagen gives our body its structural strength and stability.  Although very beneficial the source of type II collagen in an edible form is still restricted to fish collagen, and although available there is no scientific evidence that it can deliver the potential benefits that we require.

Type III Collagen

Type III Collagen is the collagen of granulation tissue and is produced quickly by young fibroblasts before the tougher type I collagen is synthesized.  It’s also found in muscles, artery walls, skin, intestines and the uterus.  This makes us strong, it is the collagen structure in the muscle that is torn during exercise and is responsible for repair of the muscle.

proto-col’s new Bioactive type I & III collagen. The Proto-col range have a variety of Collagen Capsules and tablets available.

The new bioactive collagen peptide containing type I and III collagen is a triple helix structure and combines the three most repetitious amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.  Collagen type III is a form of granulation tissue, and is produced quickly once stimulated by young fibroblasts before the tougher type I collagen is synthesized.  The new bioactive peptide of this sport collagen has been optimised so that it also covers all the potential benefits of type II collagen without actually being type II in a raw form.

By delivering all three required types of collagen requirements which are naturally found in our body, our “body and joint formulation” becomes a ground breaking new formulation of collagen hydrolysate that can be used both by the elite athlete and the health and well-being enthusiast.

Head, Shoulders, ?????? and Toes, ??????? and Toes

Today’s post has come about as a result of a comment on my blog by Not Another Tall Blog   Thank you for your input Angie , and the life that it has given to my creation, my Blog

So here is my take on knee problems.

People frequently come into my clinic complaining of knee problems, and I find that they generally have their origins in the pelvis, even when a diagnosis of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knees has been made. Here I try to explain why this is, and what can be done to help, most of which your GP is unlikely to suggest.

Take a look at this picture, courtesy of, lowerbackpain-Help.com and look at the left leg, and how it has changed to accommodate the drop in the pelvis. Now if you haven’t done so already, click on the link above “Not Another Tall Blog” and see how Angie is standing! Hmmm do you think she has any knee problems? If you are not sure, read on.

Affect of a misaligned pelvis on the knees.

Affect of a misaligned pelvis on the knees.

You will often read articles that talk about a short leg. Practically everyone who comes into my clinic tells me that someone has told them that they have one leg shorter than the other. However, an actual leg length discrepancy is rare, and what appears rarer still, is someone that can correct the leg length discrepancy as seen in  this picture. If 2 points were measured, on each leg, the length would be the same, hence I use the term “apparent”. Now look at this picture below, courtesy of webmed.boots.com and see how complex the knee joint is. Now try and imagine the alteration in weight-bearing that happens in the knee, and you may begin to see how osteoarthritis starts. Here is a little experiment if I can try and explain. Clench one hand into a fist, and then place the other hand over the clenched hand. Take note of where the 2 hands meet, where the pressure is, within the “joint” Try and imagine that this is a knee joint. Now slightly rotate the clenched fist, whilst keeping the other hand still. Can you feel the pressure change, and different points of contact become more noticeable. That happens in any joint when the body is not aligned properly, and this is where OA has it’s origins. So what can you do about it?

The knee joint including the ligaments and tendons, which are connective tissue, and contain collagen.

The knee joint including the ligaments and tendons, which are connective tissue, and contain collagen.

Well you will find many places that recommend that you get a heel lift in your shoe. I hope that you will agree, that lifting the heel will not realign the pelvis, and is therefore NOT the answer, not in the longterm anyway.

First of all I would recommend that anybody who has problems with the knees, goes and gets their alignment checked and treated by a McTimoney Chiropractor. They are the only therapists that I know of, who actually adjust the tilt in the pelvis, actually on the pelvis. This will allow the pressure to be taken off the knee, and for healing to then occur.

Next I suggest that someone takes supplements in the form of Green Magic and collagen. Green Magic is a blend of 16 different superfoods, which will enhance the healing of the knee. It is full of vitamins and minerals that the body needs, and which, even with the best diet, are sorely lacking these days due to our poor soil states that are food is grown in. GM is full of alkaline forming foods, which are the counter-balance to the acid forming foods that we tend to eat, which leads to disease processes and ill-health.

Collagen is a protein, and totals 76% of the total protein in the human body. Like most things, the level of collagen decreases as we age, hence the signs of ageing noticeable in the connective tissues of the body, coarsening and thinning of hair, nails, skin, which are visible, but also of the bones, tendons and ligaments, which are not visible. I sell these products  in my Chiropractic clinic and also on my website.  They are my 2 best sellers for obvious reasons,

Trials have shown that taking: Collagen hydrolysate introduced exogenously, which is absorbed by the intestine and accumulates in the joint cartilage, therefore has the potential to stimulate collagen production in the remaining chondrocytes in patients withosteoarthritis. This counteracts the degenerative processes and may prevent the development of osteoarthritis. “Collagen hydrolysate is a food, not a pharmaceutical product. It has no undesirable side effects and therefore long-term regular use is safe, Dr Oesser PhD, Director of the Collagen Research Institute, Kiel, Germany.

I have articles which, if I could, I would attach to my blog They are rather lengthy, but if anybody would like to read them, then please email me via www.joyofchiropractic.co.uk and I will send you it in an attachment.

If you have any questions as a result of something that you have read here, i will be more than happy to try and answer them.

Thank you for reading. Any comments will lead me on this journey, and will be gratefully received. Namaste Joy

Hypermobilty Joint Syndrome and McTimoney Chiropractic

Something that I hear on a fairly regular basis is “I have been told not to go and see a Chiropractor!”

When I ask them what reason has been given, they so often have not been given one, or they have been told that it would be far too damaging to their joints. So let me try and explain for you what “Manipulation” is and an “Adjustment” which is what I consider McTimoney Chiropractic to be.

Let’s look at the rrange of movementange of movement, that we have in any joint. First of all we have the active range of movement. This is the range of movement that you have in a joint, or collection of joints. Move your head from side to side, and see  how much movement you have? That is a group of bones, the cervical spine, or your neck, moving actively. Shown by the denser green area here. Now having turned your head to one side “gently” push on the opposite side of your head, to the way that you have turned. You should feel that you can push your head slightly further. This is the “passive” range, illustrated by the lighter green. this is the range that physiotherpists often use when they move a limb for you, as opposed to you moving it actively.

If you were then to push hard on the side of your head, it would hurt, and your soft tissues, ligaments and tendons which stretch. It would be painful, and this is the range that many therapists that “manipulate” use.

The McTimoney method of Chiropractic does not do this. Let me repeat that.

The McTimoney method of Chiropractic takes the strain off the joint immediately at the time and point of adjustment. That means that the ligaments in the joint, when receiving a McTimoney adjustment are not stretched anymore than they are already in the person receiving the treatment. The same cannot be said for other forms of Chiropractic. Ask your Chiropractor if they treat into the paraphysiological space. If the answer is yes, and you have HJS or EDS then going to a Chiropractor is not good for you, and I would not recommend it. However if the answer is no, then Chiropractic could be considered after a full assessment including a full history taking has been undertaken.

HJS have a problem manufacturing connective tissue due to a problem with collagen synthesis. Collagen supplementation is ideal, as the body does not have to manufacture collagen from the dietary intake, but has been supplied in the form of supplements for the body to utilise. I recommend Proto-col’s collagen found here.

I cannot answer an individual’s questin, without first having ssessed them, but I am happy to reply to questions of a generic nature.

Thanks for reading!

Oh there are so many people that I could single out, but if I have to chose one person that I would like to be reading this blog, then it would have to be Andy Murray.

As a tennis fan (I write this in the early hours of the morning, just having watched Ana Ivanovic put out Serena Williams in the Australian Open) I have followed Andy’s progress, and watched as he  has grimaced and fell to the ground clutching various parts of his body. I would love the chance to get my hands on him, and straighten him up. Why do I think that he could do with realigning? Because he posts photographs where one shoulder is higher than the other.

For anybody watching the Australian Open, have a look at their logo of a tennis player, with left arm outstretched throwing the ball up to serve, and the right arm ready to power through the serve, at that point the spine is arched, ready to flex as the body comes through to serve. They repeatedly perform this one-sided actions,  add to that the fact that they carry heavy bags on 1 shoulder, then they are prone to mis-alignments. I am frequently advising women not to carry bags on theri shoulder, and this picture shows just what the spine does to compensate.

handbag skeleton Imagine it was a tennis bag, and then add to that the nature of the game. Can you see why so many tennis players have so many injuries. Should have gone to a McTimoney Chiropractor?

Being a one-sided sport, it is very important that a tennis player does exercise that balances the body up, and I am sure that Andy has the best team behind him, to make sure that his strength is even. I once treated an up and coming tennis player, when he was just 14. His dominant side had well developed musculature, but his non-dominant side was, well I can only call it puny! He did not balance his strength up on his non-dominant side, and his strong side pulled his weak side out of a alignment, giving rise to sport’s injuries. He could not join a gym as he was considered too young! I often wonder how his health is now, he went off to the tennis academy in Surrey, where I am sure they took good care of him.

Andy has recovered well from the surgery that he had on his back, if his performance at the Australian Open is anything to go by. We have not been told exactly what his surgery entailed, but I often wonder whether he would have needed the treatment had he had McTimoney Chiropractic treatment, and started to take Proto-col collagen capsules. Who knows, maybe he already takes them? Proto-col has highly regarded professionals who advise elite athletes, so maybe he is one of our “Team Proto-col” but just prefers it if is a closely guarded secret. Athletes commonly have treatments that are known only to them and their close team, as they consider that it gives them an edge on their competitiors.

James Greenwell of Proto-col discusses the importance of collagen supplements for athletes.

So Andy, this is for you! My daughter is at Uni at Stirling, just up the road from Dunblane. I am taking her back after the Christmas break next Saturday 26th January. I hope that you are otherwise occupied down-under, but if you happen to have free weekend, and you are “at home” celebrating Burns Night, then I would be only too happy to pop by! 🙂

I guess you could just buy it from here, and keep it a secret 😉

St Andrews Day 2013

It was sad news, to wake up this morning, to hear about the tragic events in Glagow, which happens to be about 35 miles away from me.

I had intended to write a blog extolling the virtues of the skincare range, but it seems rather banal when countrymen and women are waiting to hear whether or not their friends and family have been hurt by the incident. However I know that for many people, both local and far away, it will hardly even register, the fact that a helicopter came down on a crowded pub in Glasgow last night. So I dedicate today’s blog to all those who have been affected, either directly or indirectly on the tragic accident that happened to The Clutha, last night.

We have had wild winds and bitterly cold ones at that, for the past 6 weks or so. There have been days where we have had to scrape the ice off the windscreen in the mornigs, and it takes a toll on our skin.

So my first recommendation for mature skin in the winter is the nourishing facemask. This rick facemask is designed to combat the drying effect that wind and dry heated environments have on the mature skin.  Image

This rich formulation delivers ultimate proto-col facial skin care. A nourishing, luxurious facemask.
Natural extract of Algae helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles while Coral Seaweed, rich in amino acids and containing Calcium and Magnesium for healthy skin, intensely moisturises for smooth, hydrated skin. Plant derived Collagen, which is made up of three types of plant Collagen, has been specially selected for its potent anti-ageing formulation. Neroli Oil and Magnesium stimulate skin cell regeneration and improve skin elasticity. Zinc, essential for the growth of healthy new cells, accelerates the healing process while cooling and soothing Aloe Vera helps heal skin. Powerful antioxidants Vitamins C and E protect the skin from UV damage and environmental pollution while skin softening Jojoba Oil hydrates.

Application: apply to thoroughly cleansed skin. Start by applying along the cheekbone and smile line and smooth the mask thinly and evenly onto skin in an upward motion

This little beauty has become a “must” in my beauty routine twice a week.

Secondly, I recommend the Instant Manicure. Here is what they have to say about it.

Gain super smooth hands with this rejuvenating blend of essential oils and Dead Sea salts. Sensational natural aromatherapy to condition even the unhappiest hands.

Cold winds leave the hands chapped and sore. This deliscious handscrub gently exfoliates the rough skin, leaving the skin soft and smooth. I love this product, and hope my hubby reads this and makes sure that there is a pot of it in my stocking. I have left the nearly empty pot lying around the bathroom for the past few weeeks hoping that he will take the hint!

Having made sure that my hands are super smooth, I finish with applying my handcream. This is a rich cream which penetrates quickly without leaving that sticky feeling that so many other handcreams leave.

Naturally rich in Vitamins A, E & F, proto-col’s nourishing collagen hand cream soothes rough, dry and chapped hands boosting cellular activity and improving skin elasticity. Combining royal jelly, a natural antibacterial agent and a rich source of Vitamin B5, with shea butter and collagen to hydrate and nourish, regenerate and protect, proto-col’s collagen hand cream leaves your hands feeling beautifully soft and supple.
The light formulation absorbs quickly, without leaving a greasy residue, helping to restore the youthful appearence of tired looking skin and nails. Massage proto-col’s collagen hand cream into your skin throughout the day, providing you with fabulously soft, intensely moisturised, younger feeling skin.
